Finding Solutions for Your Septic Tank Problems

Get Your Septic Tank Pumped Regularly

by Senanur Norder

A septic tank is necessary if you live somewhere that doesn't have a connection to the local sewage plant. For example, if you live out in the country, you are probably too far away from the nearest sewer processing plant, or you may have a lot of land features that are in between you and the sewage facility. You might be across a lake or a river or have a huge hill in between you and the facility, which would make it very hard to install a sewer line. If you have a septic tank, you need to make sure that you have it pumped regularly. What does it mean to have your tank pumped?

Septic Tank

The way that a septic tank works is that all the wastewater is drained into the tank. Tanks are generally made up of more than one section. The first section is where all the wastewater will first go. In that section, anaerobic bacteria munch away at all the solids in the wastewater and produce some sludge that falls to the bottom of the chamber, as well as any undigested solids. As the solids fall out of the water, the remaining liquid goes into the second chamber for more purification and then will go out into the leach field where it will finish out the full purification process and eventually end up in the groundwater. The sludge that is collected in the first chamber will eventually start to build up to such a high level that the liquids will not be able to move on the way that they should. That's when you need to get it pumped out.

Pumping

The way that the pumping process works is that the company that is doing the pumping will come out with a huge tank truck and a vacuum hose. The tech doing the job will find the lid to your septic tank, remove it, then stick the hose down into your tank and turn on the vacuum. Depending on where you live, you may have a tank that has a buried lid, which means that the tech will have to go searching for it, and you will have to have a pretty good idea as to where the tank is, which will make everyone's job easier. It doesn't generally take a long time to pump everything out, and then you can get back to flushing your toilet quickly.

A septic tank is important because you wouldn't otherwise have a way to get rid of your wastewater. Make sure that you take good care of it so that you can keep it working for a while. Contact a septic tank pumping company to learn more.
